Irish Times Article – Reviews

Irish Times Article – Reviews: “Bray Jazz Festival

To judge by the headline concerts at the event’s main venue, the Mermaid Arts Centre, this year’s Bray Jazz Festival maintained its reputation for quality. And the programming, too, was a microcosm of the diversity of musical language that is now the norm within the idiom.” [Subscription required to read full review on Ireland.com]

The Berkman / Buckley Quartet on tour in Ireland 25 – 29.04.2006

David Berkman, the New York jazz pianist joins Dublin saxophonist Michael Buckley with a quartet to tour in Ireland from Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29th April.

The quartet will perform at the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork on Tuesday 25th, for the Ballina Arts Centre on Wednesday 26th, for The Letterkenny Arts Centre on Thursday 27th and at The Bray Jazz Festival on Saturday 29th April.

The members of this all star quartet are:
David Berkman (piano) American,
Michael Buckley (saxophones and flute) Irish,
Aidan O’Donnell (double bass) Scottish,
Sean Carpio (drums), Irish.

The unique quality of the Berkman / Buckley Quartet is that the leaders are both outstanding jazz composers. American David Berkman has been writing and performing his music and his recordings have showcased his writing skills. Irishman Michael Buckley had his compositions first recorded on his debut album “Pendulum” and he has been writing ever since. Michael Buckley was commissioned recently to write and perform “Translations”, bringing the sean-nos tradition to a jazz setting. David has been composing for some time, whereas Michael is a relatively new writer.

Both of these musicians are great exponents of their own compositions, but also have command of the jazz repertoire and play with great skill and artistry on their respective instruments, David on piano and Michael on saxophones and flute.

In this truly international band, the virtuoso young Scottish bassist, Aidan O’Donnell and the exciting Irish drummer Sean Carpio will join them. Sean Carpio has just finished a short tour of Ireland with his band White Rocket.

This tour is organised by Jazz on the Terrace

The Improvised Music Company Regional Touring Scheme is assisting this tour.

Gold State, Navan Building Services, Richmond Building Products and Tactile Signs are sponsoring this tour.

Oldsquarelines impress at JJs

Oldsquarelines, formerly Orpheus, completed a short Irish tour here, playing to a near-capacity audience. The quintet – Seán Óg (alto/soprano/flute), Daniel Jacobson (guitar), Greg Felton (piano), Dave Redmond (bass) and Seán Carpio (drums) – is filled with some of the finest young talent on the Irish jazz scene, and it showed in the constantly challenging and richly varied original repertoire they performed. Irish Times review Norma Winstone and Tommy Halferty

The Boom Boom Room was packed to capacity on Thursday night for the visit of the great British singer, Norma Winstone, linking up after a gap of several years with local guitarist Tommy Halferty. Clearly anticipating something special, the audience contained many Irish singers and instrumentalists, as well as those who recall the pair’s celebrated performance at the Bank Of Ireland Arts Centre a few years ago. Dorothy Murphy Quartet enthralls a packed house

Last night in Dublin’s Boom Boom Room Dorothy Murphy and her quartet kicked off Jazz on the Terrace’s “September Song” Festival. With a repertoire that included old favourites (“Somewhere over the Rainbow”, “Angel Eyes”), some of her own compositions (“The Calling”, “Elgeism (LGSM)”) and compositions by members of her quartet (“Static” by Jonathan O’Donovan, guitar), she entertained a rapt audience with her subtle and stylish vocals. Accompanied by Seán Carpio on percussion, Andrew Csibi on double bass and Jonathan O’Donovan on guitar, Murphy took the stage as much as a hostess as an entertainer and brought the audience right into her house of song.

The Festival continues throughout September with performances by the Emma Blake Quartet (8.30pm Thurs 08.09.2005), the Christine Tobin Quartet (8.30pm Thurs 15.09.2005) and finishes with Norma Winstone – Tommy Halferty Duo (8.30pm Thurs 22.09.2005). More information on September Song Mini-Site

The Boom Boom Room is upstairs in Conway’s Pub on Parnell St, right opposite the Rotunda (i.e. turn left at the top of O’Connell St.)

Barbara Dunne at The Mermaid in February

Barbara Dunne Singer/Songwriter and pianist will perform with Stringology in The Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Co. Wicklow on Wednesday 2nd February at 8.00pm. EUR15/13 concessions (01 2724030)

“Dunne’s experience as a jazz musician and classical pianist are in evidence. Many of the songs are heavily piano-laden, sporting a string quartet who give full value for money. Dunne can really sing and puts her obvious vocal skills at the service of the song.” writes Jackie Hayden, HOTPRESS

Barbara Dunne has been described as a singer in the style of Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos and American Indie artists Jonatha Brooke and Bridget Brigette, recent visitors to Ireland. Her first album, “Finish Starting” with Stringology was launched in 2004.

Barbara has won the Dun Laoghaire and Maynooth Song Contests. She has performed in London and Paris, at the NCH, Goffs, Whelans, Seven Oaks, United Arts Club and Old Mill, Naas. She performed with Billy Brown and Daire Winston, The Dubliners and Luka Bloom.

Stringology is a string quartet with a fresh approach. As well as classical, they play their arrangements of music by Bowie, Police, Coldplay and Bjork. Stringology has appeared with bands such as Somadrome and Automata and in 2004 appeared at the Tullamore festival “MOR”.

This exciting ensemble have played as part of the Dublin Electronic Festival in the Project Arts Centre Stringology performed recently with David Kitt. In this concert the quartet will be joined by vocalists Jenny Lindfors and Abigail Smith.

Presented by Jazz on the Terrace and The Mermaid Arts Centre
